Save time and hundreds of dollars by learning how to repair and overhaul your car’s brakes.

There are many automotive tasks that are best left to qualified and certified professionals when considering repairing your automobile. There are also many tasks that can be tackled by the weekend do-it-yourselfer with a decent level of instruction. While just about any system repair or overhaul on more modern cars has gotten more complex over time, brake diagnosis and repair is still well within reach for the home mechanic with a reasonable set of hand tools.

In Brake Repair: How to Diagnose, Fix, or Replace Your Car’s Brakes Step-By-Step, ASE technician and professional instructor Steven Cartwright takes you through the entire process of servicing your car’s brakes to like-new condition. Ten informative chapters cover everything you will need to know, including chapters on brake history, an overview of function, types of brakes, power assist, troubleshooting, electronic controls such as ABS, and finally, a complete chapter showing you how to do an entire brake job in step-by-step color photos.

With traditional dealership labor rates hovering around $125 per hour these days, it is easy for a standard four-wheel disc brake job to cost close to $1,000 when all is said and done. With the help of this book, you will be able to competently and confidently complete the task in similar fashion for less than half the cost, paying for this book many times over the very first time you use it. Disc brakes are common due to their advantages over drum brakes, but drum brakes are still found on the rear of some vehicles. Every year, more vehicles are produced with disc brakes on all four corners. Disc brakes are covered thoroughly in this guide.

Drum brakes were once found on all four wheels, but disc brakes have replaced them in the front and many vehicles also have disc brakes in the rear. This particular design uses a single-loop spring that acts as both the hold-down and return springs. Drum brakes are also covered here.

All components such as this disc brake caliper are covered in detail. A caliper consists of a housing with a cylinder for hydraulic pressure to push the piston into the brake pad and into contact with the rotor. A seal in the bore of the cylinder allows the piston to build pressure and force the pads into the rotor. A dust seal keeps out contaminants.

With modern automobiles, repairing or replacing your brakes is one of the few tasks within reach of the weekend do-it-yourselfer, with basic hand tools and proper instruction of course. In this book, you will be given a number of step-by-step sequences that will assist you with inspection, diagnosis, disassembly and the refurbishment or replacement of parts.

All types of parking brakes are explored. A commonly used parking brake system on vehicles with rear disc brakes is referred to as “drum-in-hat.” This name comes from the fact that a small brake drum is cast into the “hat” section of the rotor. The drum system is only used when the parking brakes are applied, so the friction material has little or no wear because the vehicle is stationary.

Both hydraulic systems and vacuum brake assist systems are covered. This cutaway shows the internal components of a vacuum balanced power booster. When the brakes are not applied, engine vacuum is present on both sides of the diaphragm. When the pedal is depressed, atmospheric pressure takes the place of the vacuum on the driver’s side of the diaphragm and force increases on the rod leading to the master cylinder.

ABS systems are becoming more common on most modern cars and trucks. The ABS module reads inputs to control outputs just like any computer does. If the brake pedal is depressed and one wheel speed sensor looks different than the others, the ABS processor attempts to prevent lockup of the affected wheel by using three modes. It can HOLD pressure, RELEASE pressure, or REAPPLY pressure to the affected wheel(s).
